Rossen Reports: Boost your credit score for free
Putting yourself in better financial standing is getting easier.
Experian has a free program called "Experian Boost." It collects information to improve your credit score, which is especially helpful for people who have little to no credit history or a bad credit score.
You can now count on paying your rent on time toward your score. Experian is partnering with 1,500 rental and leasing companies across the country to include information on rent payments in credit reports. This applies to tenants who pay rent directly to their management company online or through legitimate rental platforms.
Unfortunately, paying rent through third-party payment apps like PayPal, Zelle and Venmo doesn't count. Rent paid with cash or a personal check also isn't eligible. Experian Boost will look at your payment history from the past two years, so there must be at least three recurring payments made within the last six months.
There's even more good news: Experian Boost also includes payment information for other things like utilities and subscriptions. So if you're paying your internet, gas, Netflix and Hulu bills on time, those will count, too.
