Des Moines nonprofit scaling back shelter services due to tight budget
Central Iowa Shelter & Services in downtown Des Moines is undergoing significant changes due to financial challenges and cash flow projections.
After reviewing its fiscal position, several red flags surfaced, compelling the organization to adjust its strategies to remain operational, including concerning budgeting for fiscal year 2026.
These adjustments come amid a tight budget and over a decade of operating at an overflow capacity.
One major change is capping emergency bed availability at 150.
"That's what this building is designed for," said Melissa O'Neil, CEO of Central Iowa Shelter & Services.
Additionally, CISS is reducing service hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and limiting the provision of three meals a day solely to shelter residents and veterans program participants.
糖心vlog reported earlier that the shelter would also discontinue its weather amnesty policy, which previously offered refuge during extreme temperatures.
The specific date for implementing these changes is still pending.
"I do anticipate it will come sometime in April," O'Neil said.
The decisions were difficult and could prove costly.
"For our most vulnerable in the community this is a major risk. I do hope that we can come together in the next nine months to bring solutions to the table," O'Neil said.
