12 NEWS. THIS IS BREAKING NEWS. THE PEOPLE OF NORTH CAROLINA ARE IN MOURNING FOR THE LOSS OF. THREE OFFICERS. TRAGEDY STRIKES THE CITY OF CHARLOTTE AFTER A SHOOTOUT LEAVES FOUR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS DEAD AND FOUR OTHERS HURT. WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND THE VICTIMS. PLUS HOW OFFICIALS AND THE COMMUNITY ARE PAYING THEIR RESPECTS FOR THE LIVES LOST IN THE LINE OF DUTY. THAT BREAKING NEWS IS OUR TOP STORY THIS MORNING. A TOTAL OF EIGHT LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS WERE SHOT, INCLUDING THREE CHARLOTTE MECKLENBURG POLICE OFFICERS WHO ARE STILL RECOVERING. FOUR OF THOSE SHOT HAVE DIED, THREE WERE SERVING ON A US MARSHALS FUGITIVE TASK FORCE. ONE WAS A CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG POLICE OFFICER, AND THAT OFFICER HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS JOSHUA AYER. HE SERVED THE CMPD, NORTH TEHRAN TRYON DIVISION FOR SIX YEARS. WE ALSO LEARNED THE IDENTITIES OF TWO OF THE US MARSHALS KILLED SAM POLLACK AND ALDEN ELLIOTT. THEY WERE BOTH 14 YEAR VETERANS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF ADULT CORRECTIONS. POLICE SHARED THE FOLLOWING VIDEO ONLINE, WHERE A PROCESSION CARRIED CMPD OFFICER JOSHUA AYERS BODY FROM THE HOSPITAL TO THE MEDICAL EXAMINER’S OFFICE LAST NIGHT. YOU CAN SEE CRUISERS LINING THE ENTRANCE THERE IN SUPPORT OF THE OFFICERS AND FAMILIES IMPACTED BY YESTERDAY’S DEADLY SHOOTING. POLICE CHIEF JOHNNY JENNINGS CALLING IT A TRAGIC DAY FOR THE CITY OF CHARLOTTE AND FOR THE PROFESSION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. OUR MARIA DEBONE IS LIVE IN CHARLOTTE, OUTSIDE OF POLICE HEADQUARTERS. THIS MORNING. MARIA, WHAT DO WE KNOW AT THIS HOUR. WELL, WE KNOW POLICE ARE QUESTIONING TWO PEOPLE WHO WERE INSIDE THE HOME AT THE TIME WHEN US MARSHALS OFFICERS TRIED TO SERVE THAT WARRANT. THEY ALSO FIRED SHOTS AND WE ALSO KNOW THAT THE SUSPECT WHO FIRED THOSE INITIAL SHOTS WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. NOW, THIS ALL STARTED AROUND 130 YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN MEMBERS OF A US MARSHALS TASK FORCE WERE TRYING TO SERVE A WARRANT FOR A CHARGE OF POSSESSION OF A FIREARM BY A CONVICTED FELON AT A HOME ON GALLOWAY DRIVE IN THE EASTERN PART OF THE CITY. THAT SUSPECT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 39 YEAR OLD TERRY CLARK HUGHES JR. AUTHORITIES SAY WHEN MARSHALS APPROACHED HUGHES, WHO THEY WERE TRYING TO SERVE, HUGHES SHOT AT THEM. MARSHALS FIRED BACK, KILLING HUGHES. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE TASK FORCE THEN CALLED FOR BACKUP FROM THE CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT, STARTING A STANDOFF. AS OFFICERS APPROACHED HUGHES, POLICE SAY TWO PEOPLE INSIDE THE HOUSE STARTED SHOOTING AT OFFICERS. OUR TEAM SPOKE WITH NEW BERN NEIGHBORS WHO LIVED NEARBY WHO SAY THEY STILL CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT THEY WITNESSED THEIR LIVES. THEY WERE COPS, SHERIFFS, STATE TROOPERS FLYING DOWN THE EXPRESSWAY, GETTING THIS DIRECTION IN HER TO BE THIS CLOSE TO HOME. DEFINITELY REGISTERS DIFFERENTLY. BUT IT’S IT’S STILL SAD. I FEEL BAD FOR ALL THE FAMILIES AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, SOMETHING’S GOT TO CHANGE. AND OFFICIALS HAVE NOT RELEASED THE NAMES OF THE TWO PEOPLE INSIDE THE HOME WHO THEY’RE QUESTIONING. THEY HAVE ALSO NOT SAID IF THEY’LL FACE ANY CHARGES. Eight law enforcement officers were shot during a shootout while serving a warrant Monday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina, and four have died, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.One of the victims was a police officer with CMPD. Three were officers with the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force. Here's what we know so far about those who died:William "Alden" Elliot Officer Elliot had served with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction for 14 years, assigned to the Special Operations and Intelligence Unit. Eight law enforcement officers were shot during a shootout while serving a warrant Monday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina, and four have died, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Poloche joined the NCDAC Special Operations and Intelligence Unit in 2013.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Joshua Eyer

Investigator Joshua Eyer served with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for six years and was the Officer of the Month for April 2024.

He is survived by his wife and 3-year-old son.

Thomas M. Weeks Jr., 48, was a U.S. Marshal who was killed in the line of duty. He was a 13-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service and had served in the Western District of North Carolina for the last 10 years,

He's survived by his wife and four children.
