THIS WEEKEND, THE CENTRAL IOWA ROBOTICS TEAM IS HEADED TO TEXAS TO COMPETE AGAINST HUNDREDS OF TEAMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. vlog NICOLE TAM INTRODUCES US TO THE ATOMIC NARWHALS. ATOMIC NARWHALS IS MADE UP OF 14 SEVENTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE STUDENTS FROM MULTIPLE METRO SCHOOLS. THEY’VE SPENT DOZENS OF HOURS BUILDING AND PROGRAMING ROBOTS SINCE SEPTEMBER. ALL THE PLANNING AND PRACTICING COMES DOWN TO OUR GAME. IS 2.5 MINUTES. A LOT HAPPENS IN 100 AND 50S. THE GOAL. DROP AS MANY BLOCKS IN THE BIN OR HANG THE BLOCK ON THE BAR TO SCORE POINTS. THE ROBOTS DO A LOT OF WORK, BUT IT IS A TEAM SPORT WITH ALL THE DIFFERENT TEAMS MOVING ON THE FIELD. WE REALLY HAVE TO WORK HARD TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM. IN THIS PRACTICE ROUND ONE MINUTE AND 30S REMAINING, THE BLOCKS ARE ADDING UP IN THE BIN. OKAY, YOU CAN GET AT LEAST ONE MORE. THE CLOCK IS TICKING. TEN. NINE. EIGHT. ALL THEIR HARD WORK FINALLY COMING TO FRUITION. SINCE THE ATOMIC NARWHALS CAME TOGETHER IN 2018. THEY’VE WON PLENTY OF HARDWARE. HOPEFULLY THEIR HARD WORK THIS SEASON WILL PAY OFF ON THE WORLD STAGE IN HOUSTON NEXT WEEK. NICO

A Central Iowa robotics team is headed to Texas to compete against hundreds of teams from around the world. Atomic Narwhals is made up of 14 seventh through 12th-grade students from multiple metro schools. They've spent dozens of hours building and programming robots since September. All the planning and practicing come down to a two-and-a-half-minute competition. The goal is to drop as many blocks in a bin or hang a block on a bar to score as many points as possible. On the sidelines helping the team is Coach Smita Volz"It has been such a journey. The kids have worked so hard and for so long to get here," Volz said. "All their hard work finally coming to fruition."
