Doctors say 2-year-old died from 'non-accidental trauma'; Iowa man charged
An Iowa man has been charged after a 2-year-old suffered fatal injuries while in his care.
Roger Gillespie, 48, of Centerville, has been charged with child endangerment causing death, a class B felony.
Authorities say 2-year-old Journey Marberry was injured Jan. 19 inside a home on Drake Avenue in Centerville, where she was under Gillespie's care.
Gillespie called 911 and said he found the girl unresponsive. He told authorities that the 2-year-old fell and hurt herself while he was in another room, according to court documents.
She was immediately taken to MercyOne Hospital in Centerville and then to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, and she died on Saturday.
Centerville police say Gillespie's story does not match the toddler's injuries, which include a skull fracture. And doctors concluded the injuries resulted from "non-accidental trauma," according to court documents.
Gillespie was arrested Saturday afternoon and is being held at the Appanoose County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond.
