You may consider yourself a , until you find a random, hard-to-reach spot in your home that you had truly never considered before and it's coated in dust or mysterious stickiness. Spots that come to mind: the top of your fridge, behind the toilet and the insides of windows. Ceiling fans are definitely on that list, as it's an ordeal to haul out a ladder and brush them by hand, which may be why this cleaning hack keeps going viral.
A simple question on Reddit, over a year ago, asked, "What is the best cleaning tip you've ever received?" The whole thread of responses is interesting, like the suggestion to melt old toothbrushes with a lighter to create handy, curved scrubbers, but the tip that got 100-plus responses was about dusting off fans.
"To clean ceiling fans, put a pillow case over the blades, and then slide them off — it'll pull the dust/debris back inside of the case," .
Other Reddit users posted so many follow-up questions that the person then clarified: "edit - i personally just empty out the pillow case into the bin afterwards, and then wash it, and it's fine?" Ta-da!
It's an especially good trick because, as opposed to other methods, such as wiping with a cloth or even with a Swiffer extended over your head, you're not risking having a big chunk of dust fall onto your head. Plus, it puts to use those old pillowcases stained with mascara or whatever that you really should have thrown out a while ago. Win-win!
