Fire possibly started by discarded cigarette, officials say
A cat woke up a pair of Nebraska homeowners Wednesday morning, alerting them to a fire on the outside of their house.
The people and two cats made it out of the home safely.
Authorities believe it was started by cigarette that a woman may have improperly disposed of after smoking on the porch the night before.
Crews arrived at the home on Bellaire Boulevard around 12:20 a.m. and found fire on the porch. Officials said it went into the attic before they were able to put it out.
The flames caused damage to the porch, attic, house and a nearby garage.
Officials said a smoke detector in the kitchen didn't have a battery.
The Red Cross was called in to help the homeowners.
