The Academy Awards has come under fire recently, including this year, for the lack of diversity in those nominated. And while there is only one woman who has ever won Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow) at the annual award show, the person who holds the record for the most Oscar wins in acting related categories is a woman.
Katharine Hepburn won four Oscars throughout her career, meaning she has taken home the most Academy Awards of anyone, male or female, in history.
As a budding starlet,Hepburn at 26 years old won her first Academy Award in 1933's "Morning Glory." After that, there was a dearth of awards for the next 34 years of her career, but finally, in 1967 she won her second Oscar for "Who's Coming To Dinner," then another in 1968 for "The Lion in Winter" and her fourth in 1981 for "On Golden Pond."
You might have been aware of Hepburn's award-laden mantelpiece, but here's something you maybe didn't know: Hepburn did not turn up to collect a single one of her Oscars at the Academy Awards ceremonies.
When questioned about her lack of awards ceremony appearances, Hepburn famously said, "Prizes are nothing. My prize is my work."
And while Hepburn holds the honor of the most wins, the most nominations also goes to a woman, Meryl Streep. The theatrical powerhouse and star of such films as "Mamma Mia," "Deer Hunter" and "The Iron Lady" has been nominated an impressive 21 times, breaking her own record again in 2018 with a nomination for her role in "The Post."
