WHEN IT BECAME PUBLIC LAST YEAR. IT’S OFFICIAL THE HAWKEYES HAVE FINALLY NAMED A NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. THAT’S RIGHT. TIM LESTER WILL BE TAKING OVER FOR BRIAN FERENTZ. vlog SPORTS DIRECTOR SCOTT REISTER JOINS US IN. SCOTT. WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT LESTER? YEAH, THE ILLINOIS NATIVE HAS HAD ALL TYPES OF POSITIONS AT ALL LEVELS, INCLUDING 12 YEARS AS A HEAD COACH AT THE DIVISIONS ONE, TWO AND THREE LEVELS. ALSO 12 YEARS AS AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE LAST TEN YEARS ON HIS RESUME. HE WAS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR FOR SYRACUSE IN 2014. HIS OFFENSE RANKED JUST 116TH IN THE NATION BACK THEN. 2015 SAME SITUATION. AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR RANKED 119TH IN THE NATION. THEN HE WENT ON TO PURDUE AS THE QUARTERBACKS COACH. THEN HE SPENT SIX SEASONS AS THE WESTERN MICHIGAN HEAD COACH, GOING 37 AND 32 BEFORE BEING FIRED FOUR OUT OF HIS FIVE SEASONS THERE. LESTER DID AVERAGE 32 POINTS PER GAME OR MORE, INCLUDING ONE SEASON WHEN HIS TEAM AVERAGED NEARLY 42 A GAME. LESTER SPENT LAST SEASON AS AN ANALYST FOR THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. IT WOULD BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO BE WORSE THAN WHAT IOWA HAS HAD THE PAST THREE YEARS UNDER BRIAN FERENTZ. LAST YEAR, THE HAWKEYES WERE DEAD. LAST IN THE COUNTRY IN TOTAL OFFENSE. THE YEAR BEFORE LAST, THEY WERE SECOND WORST IN THE COUNTRY IN OFFENSE. AND IN 2021, THEY WERE 10TH WORST IN THE COUNTRY. THE ILLINOIS NATIVE HAS HAD ALL TYPES OF POSITIONS, SO THE BAR FOR IMPROVEMENT COULD NOT BE LOWER. THE BIG QUESTION HOW MUCH FREEDOM WILL HE HAVE TO CALL PLAYS AND MAKE DECISIONS THAT DON’T LINE UP WITH KIRK FERENTZ IDEAS? IT’S SURELY GOING TO BE A
