HEALTH. DURING THE COVID PANDEMIC. A BOONE COUNTY TRACK RUNNER IS IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER A FREAK ACCIDENT. HER MOM SAYS HER DAUGHTER SUFFERED A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AT A HIGH SCHOOL PRACTICE. WLWT NEWS FIVE’S RACHEL HIRSCHHEIMER JOINS US LIVE OUTSIDE CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S, WHERE THE TEEN IS BEING TREATED. RACHEL. HEY, CHRIS, THIS IS JUST A CASE OF WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME. HALEY JACKSON IS A JUNIOR AT BOONE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL. HER MOM TELLS ME LAST WEEK, WHEN HALEY WAS AT TRACK PRACTICE, SHE WAS HIT IN THE HEAD BY A DISCUS, CAUSING HER POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. 16 YEAR OLD HALEY JACKSON IS ALWAYS ON THE MOVE. THERE YOU GO, HALEY. WHETHER SHE’S ON THE SOCCER FIELD OR COMPETING WITH BOONE COUNTY’S TRACK TEAM, HER MOM, NICOLE, SAYS HALEY IS A GO GETTER. SHE’S VERY LOVING AND CARING. I MEAN, EVERYBODY HAS SAID IT. SHE’S JUST SUCH A SWEET PERSON. HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED? ON WEDNESDAY, WHEN HALEY WAS AT A TRACK PRACTICE AT BOONE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, NIKOLE SAYS SHE RECEIVED A PHONE CALL. HER DAUGHTER WAS HIT IN THE HEAD BY A DISCUS THROWN HER WAY BY ACCIDENT. THEY TOLD ME THAT SHE’D BEEN INJURED. SHE’D BEEN HIT IN THE HEAD AND WAS BLEEDING. AND SO I JUST SHOT STRAIGHT TO THE SCHOOL TO TO GET THERE. INITIALLY, NIKOLE THOUGHT HALEY JUST NEEDED STITCHES, BUT DOCTORS AT A FLORENCE EMERGENCY ROOM INFORMED HALEY SHE NEEDED TO GET TO CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S QUICKLY. THE WORST I EVER THOUGHT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HER ON THE FIELD WAS WE WERE GOING TO HAVE SOME SORT OF A LEG INJURY BECAUSE OF HER TYPE OF SPORT, LIKE THIS WOULD HAVE NEVER IMAGINED THAT THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. HALEY WAS RUSHED IN FOR BRAIN SURGERY. SHE UNDERWENT A CRANIOTOMY FOR A FRACTURED SKULL AND SEVERE BLEEDING. THE FACT THAT IT SHATTERED THE HARDEST PART, HE SAID, IF IT HAD GONE INTO ONE OF THE SOFTER AREAS. I MEAN, I FEEL LIKE THAT’S JUST LEFT TO YOU CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT WHAT THE CASE COULD HAVE BEEN. HALEY’S CHANCES OF PLAYING SOCCER IN HER SENIOR YEAR IS UP IN THE AIR, BUT HER MOM IS GRATEFUL. HER YOUNGEST DAUGHTER IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A FULL RECOVERY. WE GOT REALLY LUCKY THAT SHE GOT HIT WHERE SHE GOT HIT BECAUSE HE SAID THAT THAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR SKULL. AND I ALSO REACHED OUT TO BOONE COUNTY SCHOOLS FOR COMMENT ON ALL OF THIS. I HAVE NOT HEARD BACK YET. IN THE MEANTIME, A FUNDRAISER HAS BEEN SET UP TO TRY TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THESE MEDICAL BILLS THAT ARE STARTING TO PILE UP. WE HAVE A LINK TO THAT ON OUR WEBSITE, WLWT.COM REPORTING LIVE TONIGHT OUTSIDE CINCINN
