Bob Fontana, Scott DeJong each announce retirements from coaching basketball at Ankeny Centennial
SCOTT DEYOUNG BOTH SPENT A LIFETIME COACHING BASKETBALL. THEY BOTH CAME TO ANKENY CENTENNIAL WHEN IT OPENED IN 2013, AND THIS WEEK THAT CAREER SYMMETRY CAME FULL CIRCLE. SCOTT REISTER HAS OUR SUNDAY SPORTS EXTRA. I KNOW HE CAME INTO OUR FILM ROOM. WE CALL IT THE COACH’S ROOM. HE SAID, HEY, I, I THINK I’M GOING TO I TOLD NATE I’M GOING TO RETIRE. AND THEN I SAID, REALLY? I SAID, I THINK I AM TOO. SO IT WAS, IT HAD TO HAPPEN EVENTUALLY. BUT IT IS WILD TO THINK OF ANKENY CENTENNIAL WITHOUT BOB FONTANA AND SCOTT DEYOUNG, LIFELONG TEACHERS AND COACHES SYNONYMOUS WITH ANKENY. FROM THE TIME I WAS A SOPHOMORE, I HAD SOME OF MY COACHES AS TEACHERS. KISSINGER, LARRY IRELAND, JERRY PEZZETTI, FOOTBALL, SOME OF HIS ASSISTANTS. I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT THE NAMES, BUT THEY WERE GREAT TEACHERS, TOO, NO MATTER WHAT THE SUBJECT WAS. AND I THOUGHT, YOU KNOW WHAT? I WANT TO BE LIKE THOSE GUYS. AFTER COACHING A CARLISLE FROM 92 TO 96, FONTANA SPENT 16 YEARS AT CEDAR RAPIDS. KENNEDY WITH MULTIPLE STATE TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES, WHEN CENTENNIAL OPENED IN 2013, FONTANA CAME HOME, SAID, I WOULD NEVER LEAVE KENNEDY UNLESS IT WAS TO COME TO ONE PLACE, AND I WAS COME HOME, SO THAT’S WHY I TOOK THE JOB. DEYOUNG ALSO CAME TO CENTENNIAL WHEN IT OPENED IN 2013, BUT SPENT THE PREVIOUS 20 AT ANKENY HIGH SCHOOL, WINNING SIX STATE TITLES, INCLUDING FOUR IN A ROW. HE HAD ANOTHER TITLE AT CENTENNIAL. MY DAUGHTER PLAYED ON THE FOUR PEAT. WE ENDED UP RATED NUMBER TWO IN THE COUNTRY THAT YEAR. LAST GAME IN VETS, WE WON OUR LAST GAME, WE WERE UNDEFEATED. MY DAUGHTER WAS ON THE TEAM, THE CONFETTI WAS COMING DOWN AT OLD VETS AND THAT WAS WHERE EVERYBODY WANTED TO GO. LIKE VETS, VETS, VETS AND THAT WAS PROBABLY THE BEST MEMORY. SOME MEMORIES JUST DON’T FADE. IT’S CRAZY, BUT I CAN STILL HEAR THOSE SOUNDS AND SOMETIMES THERE’LL BE A SMELL AND I’M LIKE, THAT’S LIKE VETS AUDITORIUM. AND THAT’S WHERE I PLAYED MY LAST HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME AT TWO FOR ANKENY. AND NOW, IN A TIME WITH PERMISSION, SLIPS AND ABSENCES, THESE GUYS ARE AS OLD SCHOOL AS IT GETS. YOU NEVER MISSED ONE GAME, NOT ONE GAME, NOT ONE PRACTICE. I’D BEEN DEAD AND STILL COME TO PRACTICE. I THINK MY COACHES KNOW THAT. FONTANA HAD HIS 40 YEAR PERFECT ATTENDANCE WRECKED WHILE WAITING ON A COVID TEST RESULT BACK IN 2021. I SAID, WE HAVE A GAME ON TUESDAY. I’M SORRY. SO I MISSED PRACTICE ON MONDAY AND THE GAME ON TUESDAY. AND I’M LIKE, OKAY, WHAT? SO THEY GET A HOLD OF ME WEDNESDAY ABOUT 430 AND SAID, WE GOT THE TEST BACK. IT’S NEGATIVE. AND I, I WAS NOT A HAPPY CAMPER. BOTH NOW IN THEIR MID 60S, BOTH TURNED IN RETIREMENT PAPERS THIS WEEK. THEY’VE GOT THEIR REASONS. I HAVE EIGHT GRANDKIDS. HE’S STILL GOT TO GET CAUGHT UP. HE ONLY HAS SEVEN. ONE ON THE WAY. WE’RE GOING TO BE TIED OKAY OKAY. WELL IT WAS A HARD DECISION. YOU KNOW IT’S REALLY BITTERSWEET. I THINK ABOUT THE MEMORIES. IT’S BEEN A GREAT RIDE. A LOT OF MY COACHES WERE READY TO LEAVE. THEY’VE BEEN STAYING ON FOR A FEW YEARS. NOT ONLY DO THE MEMORIES WITH YOUR PLAYERS AND COACHES, BUT YOUR RELATIONSHIPS YOU ESTABLISHED WITH OTHER HIGH SCHOOL COACHES YOU COMPETED AGAINST AROUND THE STATE, AND EVEN EVEN SOME COLLEGE COACHES. AND THOSE RELATIONSHIPS WILL STILL BE THERE. THE FACES OF JAGUAR HOOPS EACH CALLING IT A CAREER. WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO BEING DONE AND IT JUST HAPPENED TO BE THIS YEAR AT THIS AND ABOUT THE SAME EXACT SAME TIME. A MUCH SMALLER TO DO LIST AWAITS. I LIKE I’M WATCHING NCAA GAMES AND I’M WATCHING ALL THEM. I’M LIKE, HEY, I DON’T HAVE TO PLAN FOR OPEN GYMS OR WEIGHTLIFTING SESSIONS OR SUMMER CAMPS, BUT THEY CAN STILL RUN WHATEVER PLAY THEY WANT. I GUESS THERE’S OTHER THINGS TO DO. I DON’T KNOW, I’VE NEVER DONE IT. I’
