New Iowa men's basketball coach Ben McCollum earned national recognition Monday for his efforts this past season at Drake. McCollum was named the winner of the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year award, given annually to the best first-year Division I head coach in the country. McCollum led Drake to 31 wins, including a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in more than 50 years.The 2024-25 season was McCollum's first (and only) at Drake. Before that, he spent more than a decade at Division II Northwest Missouri State, where he led the team to four national championships.McCollum was introduced as Iowa's next head coach last week.
