Its storyline following a young 13-year-old girl as she navigates life after finding out her older sister is actually her mother opened the door for the show to deal with real issues like teen pregnancy.Well, Andi Mack isn't done taking on real social issues for tweens in their storylines. This season, Disney Channel will make history by introducing its first-ever gay main character when season two returns on Friday.In the season premiere, Andi finds herself awkwardly sorting out her feelings for Jonah Beck — at the same time as her best friend Cyrus does!The season two premiere finds Cyrus, played by the amazing Joshua Rush, beginning to realize that he has feelings for Jonah Beck too. This realization begins Cyrus' journey to self-discovery and ultimately, with unwavering love and support from his friends, his self-acceptance as a gay individual. Along the way, Cyrus must figure out how to tell his new girlfriend about this revelation.Disney Channel is finally broaching the subject of middle schoolers discovering their sexuality, and it's not a storyline they're taking lightly.To ensure the story was told in an age-appropriate and respectful manner, Disney Channel and Terri Minsky consulted child development experts, Common Sense Media, GLAAD and PFLAG.Joshua Rush is beyond excited to bring this historic storyline to life on screen."Starting conversations about trust, love, relationships and family dynamics is easier when you have a show that you can relate to," Joshua wrote on Instagram after the news broke. "Andi Mack gives young people and their parents, mentors, and champions a meaningful way to talk about these topics and the power to decide their futures.
