BO YOU HAPPEN TO SPEAK WITH POLICE TODAY ABOUT WHERE THEY’RE AT IN THIS? INVESTIGATION? YEAH. JODI. LAURA, THIS IS GOING TO BE A TEDIOUS, VERY LENGTHY INVESTIGATION. NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED AT THIS POINT. POLICE TAKE A LOT OF FACTORS INTO CONSIDERATION IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS. WE HAVE A POSSIBLE FOUR YEAR OLD GUNSHOT VICTIM. THE CALL FOR SERVICE WENT OUT AROUND 230 MONDAY AFTERNOON. POLICE SAY THEY RECEIVED A 911 CALL FROM THE CHILD’S PARENTS, STATING THEIR FOUR-YEAR-OLD HAD BEEN SHOT ACCIDENTALLY. ROBERTSON GET A HELICOPTER TO PLEASE THE CHILD WAS TAKEN BY AIR AMBULANCE TO MERCYONE IN DES MOINES, WHERE THEY DIED. THE CHILD WAS ABLE TO ACCESS A ROOM WHERE A FIREARM WAS AT. PARENTS THOUGHT THE GUN WAS LOCKED UP, BUT IT WASN’T. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE CHILD SHOT THEMSELVES WITH A HANDGUN. THEY SAY A PARENT AND ANOTHER YOUNG CHILD WERE IN THE HOME WHEN IT HAPPENED. POLICE ARE TAKING SEVERAL FACTORS INTO ACCOUNT IN THEIR INVESTIGATION, LIKE WHERE THE GUN WAS STORED, WHETHER IT HAD A LOCK IN PLACE AND WHETHER THE CHILD COULD ACCESS IT EASILY. ALL THOSE THINGS WE LOOK AT IN THESE INVESTIGATIONS, BUT I WILL SAY PEOPLE NEED TO LOCK UP THEIR GUNS. IOWA CODE SAYS FIREARMS MUST BE LOCKED OR SECURED, SO SOMEONE UNDER 14 YEARS OLD CANNOT REASONABLY GAIN ACCESS TO IT. VIOLATIONS ARE PUNISHABLE AS A SERIOUS MISDEMEANOR. OF COURSE, AT THIS POINT, WE WILL CONTINUE OUR INVESTIGATION AND WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE FAMILY THE BEST WE CAN. IN STOREY AND POLK COUNTY, THE PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENTS PROVIDE GUN LOCKS TO ANYONE WHO ASKS FOR ONE. POLICE SAY IN ADDITION TO THAT, GUN OWNERS SHOULD ALSO STORE FIREARMS SEPARATE FROM AMMUNITION IN A LOCKED LOCATION. THEY NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY’RE NOT ACCESSIBLE BY CHILDREN. WE NEED TO DO THOSE TYPE OF THINGS TO PROTECT PEOPLE FROM THAT SHOULDN’T HAVE ACCESS TO THEM, FROM GETTING THEM. AND WE MENTIONED THERE THAT STORY COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH HAS GUN LOCKS AVAILABLE TO PEOPLE. THEY ARE FREE AND CAN BE YOU CAN GET THEM AT THEIR OFFICE, AT THE THEIR OFFICE AT THE MARY GREELEY MEDICAL CENTER. WE’RE LIVE

Investigators say the child shot themselves with a handgun.

"The child was able to access a room where a firearm was at. The parents thought the gun was locked up but it wasn't," said Major Jason Tuttle with the Ames Police Department.

They say a parent and another young child were in the home when it happened.

Iowa code says firearms must be locked or secured so someone under 14 years old cannot reasonably gain access to it. Violations are punishable as a serious misdemeanor.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police have not identified anyone who is facing charges at this time.

In Story County, the Public Health Departments provides free gun locks to anyone who asks for one.

Police say in addition to that, gun owners should also store firearms separate from ammunition in a locked location.

"You need to make sure that they're not accessible by children. We need to do those type of things to protect people that shouldn't have access to them from getting them," Tuttle said.
