Addy Brown: The Cyclones' Swiss army knife on and off the court
BASKETBALL SEASON. WHEN YOU’RE SITTING ON THE BENCH, STARTING LINEUPS ARE ABOUT TO BE CALLED TAKE ME INTO YOUR MIND. OBVIOUSLY, A LOT OF NERVES. I MEAN, I GET I GET NERVOUS BEFORE GAMES STILL, BUT NERVES ARE A GOOD THING. AND I THINK ONE WAY I KIND OF JUST CALM MYSELF DOWN IS JUST JUST BY PRAYING. I PRAY WITH THE BODY BEFORE THE GAME. EVERY GAME GIVES US THAT SENSE OF, YOU KNOW, FAITH AND TRUST. I GOT TO ASK HOW YOUR PERSONALITY FACTORS INTO THIS TEAM. I CAN SEE A GOOFING AROUND AND WHATNOT, BUT THEN WHEN YOU’RE ON THE COURT, YOU ARE DIALED. I’M VERY FOCUSED WHEN IT COMES TO THE GAME, AND I TRY AND STAY LOCKED IN FOR MY TEAM, BUT SOMETIMES YOU KIND OF NEED A LITTLE JOKE OR YOU NEED A LITTLE, HEY, IT’S COOL. LIKE, WE’RE OKAY. JUST SMILE. I MEAN, THAT HELPS YOU WHEN YOU LET OUT A SMILE, IT CALMS YOUR BODY DOWN. HOW DO YOU COMMUNICATE WITH THEM? KEEP THEM LEVEL HEADED DURING THIS POSTSEASON? I THINK JUST LETTING THEM KNOW THAT IT’S JUST IT’S JUST LIKE ANOTHER GAME, YOU KNOW, JUST BECAUSE IT’S LABELED MARCH MADNESS OR TOURNAMENT TIME, NOTHING CHANGES. THE LIGHTS ARE THE SAME, HOOPS THE SAME, THE BALL IS THE SAME. SO WE CAN JUST GO OUT THERE AND DO US AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ANY OF THAT. DO YOU REALLY, TRULY BELIEVE THAT THOUGH? YOU SAID YOU GET NERVOUS? I DO GET NERVOUS. I GET NERVOUS FOR EVERY GAME. BUT I TRULY DO THINK THAT SOME PEOPLE TREAT IT LIKE IT’S TOTALLY SOMETHING ELSE WHEN IT’S JUST IT’S AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT’S JUST A BASKETBALL GAME. I HEARD YOU’RE A TEASER THAT YOU KIND OF LIKE TO POKE FUN. YEAH, IF YOU DISH IT, CAN YOU TAKE IT? OH FOR SURE. YEAH. NO, THAT’S ANOTHER THING THAT KIND OF RUNS IN MY FAMILY. LIKE WE LIKE TO TALK TRASH. WE’RE ALL SUPER COMPETITIVE. OKAY. DOES ANYBODY EVER CALL YOU DOWNTOWN? ADDIE BROWN? YEAH. NO, MY TEAMMATES WILL CALL ME THAT SOMETIMES AS A JOKE. I THINK PEOPLE CALL MY DAD THAT IN HIGH SCHOOL. REALLY? YEAH. LIKE THAT WAS HIS NICKNAME WAS DOWNTOWN BROWN. SO THAT’S KIND OF COOL THAT IT PASSED THE NAPS. HOW OFTEN ARE YOU NAPPING? OH MY GOSH. LIKE EVERY DAY IF POSSIBLE. SERIOUSLY, I LOVE A NAP. SO IS IT LIKE CLASS PRACTICE NAP? YEAH. OF COURSE. YOU KNOW, THOSE THINGS COME FIRST? NO, BUT ESPECIALLY ON A GAME DAY, LIKE, TYPICALLY WE HAVE TIME. QUITE A BIT OF DOWNTIME. I ALWAYS TRY AND GET A PRE-GAME NAP IN. WHO’S THE WILD CARD ON THE TEAM? OH, GOD. HONESTLY, I WOULD SAY ADDIE ALSO IS A WILD CARD BECAUSE THAT GIRL HAS LIKE 50 DIFFERENT HOBBIES AND YOU’RE JUST LIKE, WHAT? LIKE, OH, YOU CAN PLAY THE DRUMS. LIKE, OH, YOU CAN SING LIKE, OH, YOU CAN DO ALL THESE OTHER THINGS. YOU CAN DJ OH, DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES BESIDES NAPPING? GOSH, YOU MAKE IT SOUND LIKE I SLEEP, WHICH I DO. I LIKE TO PLAY VIDEO GAMES. I LIKE TO FISH, I LIKE TO READ HERE AND THERE WHEN I GET SOME TIME. HOW DO YOU BALANCE THE SERIOUS SIDE OF ADDIE BROWN YET? YOU’RE SO SILLY. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO INSERT THOSE ONE LINERS? AS A LEADER AND AS SOMEONE WHO’S PLAYED BASKETBALL FOR A WHILE AND JUST REALLY LEARNING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, THE MENTAL SIDE OF THE GAME, AND IT’S OKAY TO HAVE FUN WITH IT AND IT’S OKAY TO SMILE AND KIND OF JUST RELEASE THAT PRESSURE. AND I THINK THAT’S KIND OF WHERE I SENSE THAT WE NEED A LITTLE FUN, AND I’M ABLE TO KIND OF

"A lot of nerves," said Iowa State forward Addy Brown. That was the sophomore's response when asked what she thought during starting lineups. Brown leads the Cyclones in rebounding (7.8 rebound per game) and is second in scoring (14.7 points per game). She also plays a team-high 31.4 minutes per game. Shannon Ehrhardt met up with Brown to find out how she stays locked in while lightening the mood.
