'Dance Moms' star Abby Lee Miller opens up about her weight-loss surgery

"There's nobody freaking out if something happens to me."

"Dance Moms" teacher Abby Lee Miller is in for a busy spring. On May 8, Miller will receive her sentence — which could include prison time — for bankruptcy fraud, ending an ongoing financial and legal battle after the dance instructor plead guilty back in June 2016. But just ahead of her court date, the 50-year-old reality star is finally settling another battle: the one against her weight. Last Friday, Miller underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery, aka gastric sleeve surgery, which removed 80 percent of her stomach. While the reality star told Entertainment Tonight beforehand that she was scared and nervous to have the surgery, she knew now was her moment. "I think this is the right time," Miller told ET. "People are saying, 'But your sentencing is coming up in a couple weeks!' And that is true, and I'm really nervous about that — more than the surgery — but there's no right time." In fact, she took the uncertainty of her future as a sign: "Maybe this is some miraculous way somebody's telling me, 'Hey go for it, do it now so that whatever happens, maybe you'll be a little bit healthier, maybe you'll be a little bit more in shape.' Who knows?" The "Dance Moms" star claims that she has tried to eat healthier, but the reality show's production team did not support her weight-loss pursuits, which she says halted her progress. "I try to be vegan… I really, really try. I don't eat any red meat and the whole animal thing really upsets me so I've tried," she said. " wouldn't care if I was trying to be vegan, they wouldn't get a special vegan meal or anything. They just laughed and would hand me a hoagie sandwich or Italian sub." In a previous interview with ET, Miller revealed how nervous she was about her upcoming sentencing. "I'm not a real physical person so... you know... we'll see. People ask me, 'Aren't you worried, aren't you this, aren't you that?' I can't think about it. I have to live every day," Miller told ET. "I just don't want to fight anymore, I have, like, this much fight in me left. I don't want to do it anymore, just save my tears for the pillow." Sounds like she plans to take her own (now infamous) advice.
